Last night, while reading Bonhoeffer, I was deeply moved by an excerpt in the book detailing the funeral of Walter, Dietrich Bonhoeffer's brother. It read, "At the end of the service, Walter's comrades bore the coffin down the aisle as trumpeters played the hymn that Paula Bonhoeffer had chose: 'Was Gott tut, das ist Wohlgetan.' Sabine remembered the trumpets playing the familiar cantata and later marveled at the lyrics her mother had chosen:
What God has done, it is well done.
His will is always just.
Whatever He will do to me,
In Him I'll ever place my trust."
I cried while reading the passage; the beauty of such great truth in midst of such great sorrow. I also, like Sabine, found myself marveling at Paula Bonhoeffer's acknowledgement of our Lord's sovereignty and perfect work, in the midst of devastating pain. To look at our lives and especially our grief with a firm belief that what God has done, is well done, is truly amazing!
